What SSA looks for

Diagnosis confirmed by medical evidence (doctor reports, labs). Evidence of significant impact: Involvement of two or more organs/body systems with specific levels of severity, plus constitutional symptoms (severe fatigue, fever, malaise, weight loss). OR Repeated severe symptoms (flares) plus marked limits in daily living, social function, or task completion. Specific criteria exist for different disorders (like lupus, systemic sclerosis). For HIV: Diagnosis plus specific conditions (like certain infections, cancers) or functional limitations. Stem cell transplant automatically qualifies for 12 months.
